📖 From the Chef’s Notebook

Inspired by the Forever Dog Life book, this recipe is a fun and easy starting point for making your own dog treats at home. We used cow lips (don’t knock it ‘til your dog tries it!), but the book also recommends options like boneless chicken breast, rabbit loin, lean beef, liver, turkey breast, lamb loin, or lean pork – so you’ve got plenty of healthy choices to play with.

Simple. Natural. Delicious.

👨🍳 Chef’s Tip:

The thinner, the better! Thin slices dry faster, last longer when used for training, and help prevent overfeeding. For easier, cleaner cuts, try semi-freezing the meat first.

Here’s the trick: no moisture = long shelf life. Dry your strips properly and they’ll last up to 4 weeks in a sealed jar somewhere cool and dry.

This batch makes 30–40 little snacks.

No dehydrator? A low oven with the door ajar slightly will do - just don’t blame me when your dog follows the smell and tries to climb in.

1

Cut into strips

Thinly slice your cow lips or meat of choice into jerky strips.

2

Combine all ingredients

In a bowl, combine:
  • 500g thinly sliced cow lips (or your meat of choice)
  • 1 tsp chia seeds
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 1 tsp almond butter
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 1 tbsp honey
3

Spread evenly on tray

Coat meat strips in the mixture. Lay them on a dehydrator tray spaced evenly apart.
4

12+ hours until crisp

Run dehydrator for 12+ hours @ 65°C / 150°F, or until the strips are dry and crispy. Depending on how thick you slice, drying can take up to 24–36 hours. Once cool, they should snap cleanly with no moisture left — just crunchy perfection!
5

Let it cool before storage

Let jerky cool completely before transferring to an airtight container. Store in a cool, dark place for up to 4 weeks.
6

Snack Time

Serve to your pup and watch them fall in love 😋
